The Fête de la Musique takes off with more than 100 stage venues! This import hit from France encourages amateur musicians and professional musicians, young and old alike, to take up their instruments every year on June 21 and perform their music for free to the public at free concerts. Thanks to the ban on street music being lifted on this day from 4:00pm to 10:00pm, music can be played throughout Berlin on public streets, squares, and parks without electricity or amplifiers.
Come and experience a musical journey of discovery
Both long-standing styles and new surprises can be discovered over the whole range of musical styles. Classical and choir music, electro and hiphop, jazz, rock, pop, reggae, and ska, world music, punk, and chanson. The festival begins at 4:00pm on the streets of Berlin. From 10:00pm, the music continues in indoor venues. The current programme and participating venues will be published by the middle of May at fetedelamusique.de .
Berlin Fête de la Musique: hot spots across the whole city
Almost all districts regularly take part in the Fête de la Musique. Musical “clusters” close together can be found in Spandau, where the festival runs throughout the old town, along Revaler Strasse in Friedrichshain, Karl-Marx-Allee and Friedrichstraße, Unter den Linden and at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Another hot spot is certainly the large stage in Mauerpark.
The history of the Fête de la Musique
The Fête de la Musique first began in 1982 in France to give exposure to the large number of musicians in the country. The festival does not have any artistic management; rather it is based on the public’s participation. Some people make performance venues available, others make their music, and everyone comes to listen, dance, and celebrate. Today, the festival is celebrated globally in more than 340 cities. Berlin has been one of them since 1995.
